Much like a man with a shy bladder who can't pee in public, I can only write (well) under certain controlled conditions. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. It's a bit annoying, because I'd love to be able to scribble out a scene on the bus or while waiting for my food at The Olive Garden, but I can't summon the drive.
It needs to be quiet, for one. And comfortable. I'm investing in a white noise machine to solve the first problem. My desk chair could maybe stand for an upgrade, which would solve the second.
But the bigger problem is a lack of discipline on my part. The human brain can be trained. I just need to invest the time and energy into making myself write, even when the situation isn't ideal, and I'll learn to adapt.
I'm mostly writing this as a way to hold myself accountable. If I'm still super picky about how and where I write six months from now, I submit myself to your public shaming. Thanks, Internet.
